I keep getting fair-skinned clients (Fitzpatrick I–II) who ask for a dark tan, then come back orange or muddy. What DHA percentage do you usually start them on, and when is it actually worth moving them up to 10–12%?

Also curious about guide-colour tricks that help them see the depth without overselling the end result. Any go-to advice for managing expectations before they sit in the tent?

For true Fitzpatrick I–II I’d start around 8–10% DHA and only step up if they’ve worn that well on previous visits. Jumping straight to 12% on virgin fair skin is where you get that orange cast — especially if aftercare is patchy.

Guide colour is your friend: a stronger violet or rose guide can look “darker” in the booth without needing a higher DHA. I often explain that depth comes from development time and moisturising as much as the bottle strength.

Suntana and OMG both do solid mid-range options for fair clients; I’d rather build them up over two visits than risk a muddy first tan. Patch-test new liquids on the inner arm if they’re sensitive.
