My gun has started spitting mid-tan and it’s wrecking the finish. I’m not sure if it’s cleaning, solution that’s too thick, cup residue, or the fact I’ve occasionally put retail mousse through the HVLP.

What’s the first thing you’d check, and is retail mousse in an HVLP a hard no from your experience?

Spitting is usually dried residue in the nozzle/needle, a partially clogged tip, or solution that’s too thick for the needle size. Strip and clean the gun thoroughly — soak the tip, check the needle isn’t bent, and don’t leave liquid sitting in the cup between clients.

Retail mousse in HVLP is a hard no for me: it’s formulated for hands, not atomisation, and it gums up guns fast. Stick to spray-tan liquids designed for HVLP.

If it still spits after a deep clean, try thinning slightly per the brand’s guidance or stepping down viscosity — and replace cheap tips before you replace the whole gun.
