Spray tan in a British autumn — DHA, rinse times and aftercare when jackets and central heating are on

When British autumn arrives, spray tan clients do not stop booking — they just need different advice. Cooler outdoor air, heavier fabrics and central heating all change how DHA develops, how long a tan looks fresh, and what aftercare actually works between coats and school-run jackets.
This is a practical guide for technicians and salon owners: lighter versus medium DHA, express versus overnight develop times, and a short aftercare checklist that holds up when clients are living in wool and radiators.
Why autumn fades feel faster
Two things collide in autumn. Outside, lower temperatures and drier air can slow the early develop window after spraying. Inside, central heating pulls moisture from skin and fabric, so the outer layers of colour wear off faster — especially on elbows, hands and the neckline where scarves and collars rub.
Clients often blame the solution. More often it is friction plus dryness. A slightly gentler DHA choice, better moisturising and clearer rinse timing usually beat jumping straight to a darker bottle.
Lighter vs medium DHA in cool weather
In peak summer many salons push medium as the default. In autumn, a lighter or soft-medium pass often looks more natural under indoor lighting and sits better under long sleeves. Medium still earns its place for clients who want depth for events, but it needs honest aftercare talk.
- Lighter / soft medium — safer for first-timers, pale skins, and anyone living in heated offices.
- True medium (~8–10% DHA feel) — best when the brief is “still tanned in a week”, provided moisturiser is daily.
- Deep / dark — keep for confident regulars; autumn jackets will show any patchiness faster.
Salon-first ranges such as Sienna X, St. Tropez, Fake Bake and Crazy Angel all cover this ladder. Fragrance-free or low-scent options such as Suntana Pure and cherry/medium lines from Suntana / Funkissed are useful when clients are scent-sensitive in closed-coat season.
Express rinse vs overnight develop
Express (roughly 1-hour rinse) wins when clients have school runs, gyms or evening plans. Overnight still gives a deeper, slower build for weekend events — but warn them about pillow transfer and heated bedrooms drying the skin overnight.
- Express — rinse on time; do not “leave a bit longer” under central heating unless the brand guide says so.
- Overnight — lighter DHA + good barrier cream on dry zones often looks cleaner than a dark overnight left too long.
Autumn aftercare checklist
- Exfoliate 24 hours before — not the morning of — so jackets do not lift fresh colour.
- Moisturise dry zones (elbows, knees, ankles) just before spraying; blot excess.
- Loose cotton for the develop window; save wool coats for after rinse.
- Rinse guide times exactly; pat dry, then moisturise while skin is still slightly damp.
- Daily body lotion once the tan is set — heating will strip oil faster than summer air.
- Hands and neck: extra care when scarves and handbags rub.
Soft brand notes (not a ranking)
St. Tropez and Sienna X remain familiar salon language for classic and express mists. Fake Bake still covers deeper “event” looks. Crazy Angel is widely stocked for medium/express litre work. Suntana Pure / Funkissed sit nicely for clients who want a cleaner scent profile without abandoning professional DHA percentages. Treat these as tools for the brief — not as market-share claims.
